Talk Therapy

This is the form of therapy most people are familiar with. Sometimes people just need to talk to process.

Reflection

Therapists get a bad rap about going back into their clients childhood to bring up old baggage. This often scares clients away and people are afraid to dig up the past. When I work with couples in marriage therapy, many of them don’t want to talk about why their relationship is where it is. They just want to work on communication and move forward. Although I respect how hard it is to do so, it is important to reflect on how you landed where you are right now. Reflecting can add such valuable insight to your life and help you understand  yourself and each other. As a therapist, the key is reflecting in a way that doesn’t retraumatize you. It needs to be contained in such a way that it is a tool and not something to create the need for more therapy. I have been trained to help you look back in an efficient manner that will be more effective and less painful.

Additionally, sometimes reflection isn’t going way back. It’s just stopping where you are right now and reflecting on why you are doing what you are doing. Having an objective person who isn’t in your day to day life can be helpful in this process.

Educate

Many clients that call me initially ask if I give feedback. I love that question. When I was going to college I couldn’t decide whether to be a teacher or a therapist. I felt passionate about both. I love that I can do both when I’m doing therapy. When appropriate, I enjoy sharing what I have learned over the years with my clients. I have read so many books, taken hours and hours of classes and attended workshops and conferences. It wasn’t just to make me better, it is knowledge gained that I want to share. Additionally, when you do this as long as I have, you learn so much from your clients. So you are gaining knowledge I have been taught by the best teachers….real people like you.

Spiritual Conversations

We are spiritual beings. We were created to be. To leave this part out of therapy is like leaving numbers out of math when you are trying to understand math.  Now when we say the word “spiritual” many people get turned off. I get that. I’ve been there. However, conversation about it is important. I am a Christian and that is my belief that gleans so much on me as a person. However, I have enjoyed having conversations with clients over the years who have no desire to talk about their spiritual life. Maybe they’ve felt judged and  have been hurt when talking about it. I have created a safe space to do this. A lot of people are curious and want to try to talk in an environment that is non-judgemental. It’s important to look at this part of yourself and how it plays into where you are right now. I commit to every client that I will never force my beliefs on you in order for us to work together. But can we have a conversation with where you are at so you can have a good understanding of your faith?

EMDR

( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy)  Wow, that sounds like a lot of something , doesn’t it? This type of therapy is actually the simplest and most effective treatment I have ever experienced. Unlike other forms of therapy, EMDR does not require talking in detail about events that have happened to you. You don’t have homework or spend time focusing on positive thoughts or changing your thinking. Your brain literally does the work for you. EMDR works to change negative thoughts and beliefs that you have and forms them into more positive and adaptive beliefs. It can help with multiple issues including trauma, anxiety, depression, panic disorders, and PTSD just to name a few. It is highly effective and backed by extensive research. To get a full understanding of EMDR, check out the EMDR International Association website by clicking the button below. You can read all about it and there are very informative videos I recommend that you watch as well. I found this youtube video helpful for my clients too. It’s short and a great summary of EMDR.

Talk Therapy

This is the form of therapy most people are familiar with. Sometimes people just need to talk to process. Time and again clients have said how much they were able to glean just by talking something out. Additionally, talk therapy is another great opportunity to get the educational piece. Clients will talk and process what is going on and then want feedback. I enjoy listening to people’s stories and helping them make sense of it. It’s amazing the gift of having an objective person that can listen without the emotion that can come with family and friends.

There you have it….Reset. When we meet, we will talk and decide what you are needing and go from there. The most important thing is remembering you have options and you won’t be put in one type of therapy just because it’s all I know how to do.
